Review · The verdict

River Cree, judged on what it publishes and what guests report

A hotel that makes sense when the evening is on the property, and less sense when it is not. The case for and against, without stars or scores.

We judge a casino hotel the way a guest uses it: the room, the walk from the car, what is open at the hour you need it, and what you can do without going near the gaming floor. River Cree passes most of those tests for a particular kind of trip, and it is honest to say which kind.

How we reached this verdict

This review is built from the resort's own pages, read one by one on 29 October 2026 with the date each page was last changed, plus tourism listings from Travel Alberta and Indigenous Tourism Alberta, trade press on the expansion and the new restaurant, and the public guest reviews we could actually open. We have not stayed as guests for this edition and we did not accept anything from the resort. Where official pages contradict each other, we print both versions.

Where it is strong

Everything is under one roof. The Venue, the restaurants, the casino and the hotel connect indoors, and the Twin Rinks were brought inside the permitted zone for minors in July 2024 — before that, the resort says, under-18s had to walk outdoors in all weather to reach the rinks. On a February night in Alberta that matters more than any lobby design.

Food keeps going late. Fatburger is open until 4 am, Cree Subs until 5 am and the hotel lists a 24/7 in-room dining service. Tap 25 starts serving food at 5 am. Few hotels near Edmonton can feed a guest coming off a 9 pm concert as easily.

Parking costs nothing. Self-parking is free on three lots around the casino, and valet is complimentary from 9:30 am to 3:00 am. A free shuttle runs to West Edmonton Mall every 30 minutes.

A real reason to eat here. Gordon Ramsay Hell's Kitchen is the first in Canada; trade press counted seven others, all in the United States. Lunch and dinner are served daily.

Where it is weak or unclear

Room information is thin. Four room types are named and filmed; none is described. If you need to know the size of the Luxury Family Suite or whether a room faces the parking lot, you have to ask. Our rooms page lists the questions worth putting to the desk.

No spa. We found no spa on any official page. There is an indoor pool, a whirlpool and a fitness centre that the 2025 hotel overview describes as open 24 hours.

The building is being extended. STAY Magazine reported a 230-room, 18-storey tower in 2024; CDC Gaming reported a 240-room project topped off at its 20th floor in June 2026, with opening aimed at July 2027. Some guests on Trip.com mention renovation work. Ask whether your room is near the works.

The casino is the centre of the building. The gaming floor is 18+ and open 24 hours, and the rules on minors keep under-18s out of it and away from its edges. Families can stay and eat, but the layout is built around the casino.

Distances differ by page. The Stay page says the airport is 20 minutes away; the hotel overview says 25. Our own calculation, without traffic, came to 34 minutes for 37.9 km.

Who should book it

  • Concert-goers with tickets for The Venue who want to walk to bed afterwards.
  • Hockey families and adult league players at the Twin Rinks, where public ice, drop-in programmes and tournaments run.
  • Wedding parties and event groups: two pillar-free ballrooms, a capacity chart that runs from a 16-seat boardroom to a 2,079-seat theatre layout, and group rates from 10 rooms.
  • West Edmonton Mall shoppers who would rather park free and take the shuttle than pay for parking downtown.

Who should not

  • Travellers who want a downtown base for the Legislature, ICE District or Whyte Avenue on foot.
  • Anyone after a spa weekend.
  • Guests who would rather not walk past a casino on the way to breakfast.
  • People flying in late with no car: we found no transit route to the resort.

Our bottom line

River Cree is a practical hotel attached to an entertainment complex, owned by the First Nation it stands on and growing fast. Judge it by the reason for your trip. If that reason is on site, it is hard to beat the convenience; if it is in central Edmonton, it is a drive. Either way, ask for the room details the resort does not print — that is what our desk is for.

Room request coupon

Tell us your dates and the room you have in mind at River Cree. The desk checks availability and the current rate with the hotel's reservations team or a booking partner, then answers by email.

No card details. Nothing is booked until you confirm.

How this paper is paid: when a request sent from this coupon turns into a confirmed stay, the hotel or the booking partner that completes the reservation pays us a commission. You pay the hotel's rate and nothing on top.

Received. The desk will write back by email, normally within one business day, with what the hotel can offer for your dates. This is a request, not a booking.
