Golf and River Cree: a closed course, two open ones, and indoor bays on the way

Golf has a complicated history on Enoch Cree Nation land. Wikipedia, citing CBC reporting, records that a Nation golf course closed in 2014 for safety reasons — the land had been part of a Second World War practice bombing range — and that the federal settlement of 2020 covered the income lost with it. The course has not reopened, as far as any source we read says.

RC Golf & Games: the resort's own plan

Daily Hive reported on 8 September 2026 that River Cree is building RC Golf & Games as part of its $200-million expansion: a two-storey, climate-controlled venue with 40 interactive driving bays, rooftop patios, private suites for events and a pro shop, plus more than 100 arcade games, eight pool tables, a prize counter, outdoor activities, and a 75-seat restaurant and lounge overlooking the range. It was first expected in 2026; the report put the opening in spring 2027. For a hotel guest in January, indoor bays a short walk from the room would change what a winter weekend here can be.

The Ranch Golf & Country Club

The nearest open course we could confirm is The Ranch, at 9574 Pinchbeck Road, Acheson, a public course 5.8 km from the resort by our calculation. The club says Score Golf magazine named it the best-value public course in Edmonton, and Travel Alberta describes it as a championship-calibre public course on open prairie just west of the city. It was taking bookings and tournament applications for its 2026 season when we read its site.

Victoria Golf Course

For a round with a view of the city, the City of Edmonton's Victoria Golf Course at 12130 River Valley Road is par 71 with a driving range. The city calls it Canada's oldest city-run course, first developed in 1896, before Edmonton itself was founded, and describes fairways that forgive beginners and mid-handicap players, with the Legislature and the University of Alberta in the background. Tee times can be booked up to seven days ahead. It is 17.0 km from the resort by our calculation. In 2026 the city opened Victoria on 29 April, Rundle on 28 April and Riverside on 4 May.

Planning a golf stay

Summer is the season for it. Book the tee time first, then send us your dates; mention early starts so we can ask the hotel about breakfast — Tap 25 serves from 5 am, The Kitchen from 7 am on weekdays. Clubs travel easily: parking is free and valet runs from 9:30 am. Ask for a ground-floor room or one near an entrance if you are carrying a bag.
